Origin and Legacy
According to local traditions and the elders connected to the temple, the history of Shree Raj Rajeshwar Mahadev is deeply intertwined with the heritage of Vadodara.
Ancient Origins
The temple is estimated to be around 200 to 300 years old. The sacred Shiva Lingam residing here is Swayambhu, meaning it manifested naturally.
The Penance Ground
Long ago, this area was a dense, unpopulated forest where sadhus (sages) and devout followers of Lord Shiva would come to perform deep penance and meditation. Over time, a permanent Shivalaya was constructed.
The King of Kings
The name 'Raj Rajeshwar' translates to 'The King of Kings.' It signifies an immensely powerful and royal manifestation of Lord Shiva.
The Nyay Mandir Connection
When Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad built the Nyay Mandir (District Court), this temple was already an established religious site. The court's architecture was deliberately designed keeping this temple at the center. It became a tradition for people seeking justice to first take darshan of Mahadev before entering the court, ensuring fair and unbiased justice. This profound tradition continues to be followed by many lawyers and locals today.
